How do I let Claude or ChatGPT send text messages?
Add Sparetext as a custom connector. It's a hosted MCP server at https://sparetext.dev/mcp: Claude or ChatGPT signs in with OAuth, then sends and reads SMS from your own Android phone or iPhone, and asks you before every send. You pair the phone once, and there's no API key to paste.
What you need
A Sparetext account (Free is 1 phone and 300 texts a month), a phone paired with it, and a Claude or ChatGPT plan that lets you add custom connectors. An Android phone sends on its own. An iPhone sends automatically through Sparetext for Mac, or through a Shortcut while the Sparetext app is open.
Claude: claude.ai, Claude Desktop and the Claude apps
The Free plan allows one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans an Owner adds it first, under Organization settings › Connectors.
- Open Customize › Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Paste https://sparetext.dev/mcp as the address and leave the OAuth client fields empty.
- Click Add, then Connect. A Sparetext page opens: sign in and choose Allow. If Claude asks how to sign in, pick Sign in now and Use Claude's published identity.
- In a chat, open + › Connectors, turn on Sparetext, and ask: "Text +1 202 555 0123 that I'm running 10 minutes late."
ChatGPT
Your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings decide whether you can add a custom MCP server. Custom GPTs and their Actions retire on December 11, 2026, so connect Sparetext as a plugin.
- On the web, open chatgpt.com/plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server.
- Name it Sparetext, paste https://sparetext.dev/mcp as the Server URL and set Authentication to OAuth.
- Select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. When ChatGPT sends you to Sparetext, sign in and choose Allow.
- Install the plugin from your plugins. In a new chat, type @, pick Sparetext and ask it to send or read a text.
Claude Code
The login opens a Sparetext page in your browser: choose Allow. Inside Claude Code, /mcp does the same.
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user sparetext https://sparetext.dev/mcp
claude mcp login sparetextWhat the assistant can do
Twelve tools: send a text, or a different text to each person in a list, now or at a set time; check a text and cancel one that hasn't gone out; read conversations and mark them read; wait for a reply; list your phones and whether they're online; and count the texts you sent. Before a text goes out, send_sms says how it will be encoded (GSM-7 or UCS-2) and how many parts your carrier will bill.
What keeps it safe
Both send tools are marked as actions that change something outside the chat, so Claude and ChatGPT ask you to approve every send. Reading texts and listing phones don't ask.
The sign-in page names the app that's asking and where it will send you back, warns about apps it can't verify, and refuses apps posing as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. A connected app can send and read texts, but keys, webhooks, automations and phones stay in the dashboard. Each connection shows on the API keys page, where Disconnect ends it.
Texts that arrive are given to the assistant as words written by whoever sent them, never as instructions. A reply of STOP opts that number out of your texts automatically.
Limits
Texts leave from your own SIM over your carrier, so this is for people who know you: reminders, confirmations, codes and replies. Carriers can filter software-sent bulk texts (A2P) from a personal number; for marketing to thousands, use a registered A2P provider. Android lets an app send 30 SMS parts a minute, and Sparetext paces under that and queues the rest. With private mode on, texts are encrypted end to end and an assistant can't read them.
We've tested the connection end to end in Claude on the web and in Claude Desktop, and in ChatGPT on the web. Claude Code, Cursor, OpenClaw and n8n connect the same standard way, with their steps on the AI agents page.
Questions people ask
- Is there an SMS MCP server for Claude?
- Yes. Sparetext hosts one at https://sparetext.dev/mcp, over Streamable HTTP with OAuth 2.1. Add it under Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector, sign in, and Claude can send and read texts from your own phone.
- Do I need a Twilio account for ChatGPT to send texts?
- Not with Sparetext. Texts go out from your own phone's SIM, so there's no number to rent and no fee per text to Sparetext. Your carrier plan applies.
- Will Claude send a text without asking me?
- No. Both send tools are marked so that Claude and ChatGPT ask you to approve each send.
- Can Claude read the reply?
- Yes. wait_for_reply waits up to 8 seconds per call for a new text from that number, and get_conversation reads the whole thread. From an iPhone, replies are read through Sparetext for Mac or a Shortcuts automation.
- How do I disconnect it?
- Remove the connector in Claude or ChatGPT, or choose Disconnect on Sparetext's API keys page. Its access ends at once.
