Sparetext vs Twilio
Twilio is a cloud messaging API: you rent numbers and pay per message segment, with carrier fees and US A2P 10DLC registration.
For a few hundred texts a month from your own number, to people who know you, Sparetext costs a flat plan and needs no number or registration. For marketing, thousands of texts a day, short codes or sender IDs, Twilio is the right tool and Sparetext isn't.
Choose Sparetext if
- Texts should come from your own number, so people recognise you and can call back.
- You don't want to rent a number, register a 10DLC brand and campaign, or pay per segment.
- An AI agent should send and read texts through a hosted MCP server.
- You're testing, prototyping, or texting staff, customers you know, or yourself.
Choose Twilio if
- You send marketing or thousands of texts a day.
- You need short codes, alphanumeric sender IDs, or numbers in many countries.
- You need an SLA, voice, or WhatsApp in the same API.

Questions people ask
- Is Sparetext a Twilio alternative?
- For texts from your own number to people who know you, yes: no number to rent, no per-text fee and no registration step, because texts go out from your phone's SIM. It is not built for bulk marketing; carriers filter that on personal numbers.
- Do I need A2P 10DLC registration with Sparetext?
- There is no registration step: texts go out from your own SIM on your own plan. But under the US carriers' rules (CTIA's Messaging Principles), texts a business sends by software count as application-to-person even from a phone, so carriers can filter them and your plan's terms may limit them. Text people who expect to hear from you, and Sparetext stops texting anyone who replies STOP. For marketing, use a registered provider.
- What does Twilio cost for a few hundred texts?
- In the US: $0.0083 a segment plus $0.0035 to $0.005 in carrier fees, $1.15 a month for a local number, and 10DLC registration (a $4.50 brand, $15 campaign vetting, then $1.50 to $10 a month). Sparetext Free covers 300 texts a month, and your carrier plan pays for the texts.
- How many texts can a phone send?
- Android lets an app send 30 message parts a minute by default, and Sparetext paces texts to that. Carriers also watch volume: hundreds an hour from one SIM can get it filtered.
